Topic: Secondary Data

Aims: To enable students to have in-depth understanding of

  1. secondary data sources,
  2. the advantages, and disadvantages of conducting secondary research, and
  3. identify the basic steps of undertaking secondary research in social inquiry.

Duration: 190 minutes

Before class 

Self-study time: 60 minutes

Before class, students can read this module’s material and other materials about secondary data. Students can also watch the following videos to better understand secondary data.

Using Secondary Data In Your Research (3 minutes 30 seconds)

Doing simple secondary data research projects (38 minutes 33 seconds)

 

In-Class

In-class time: 70 minutes

  • Exercise 1 – Identification of secondary sources – 15 minutes
  • Exercise 2- Advantages and disadvantages of secondary data – 15 minutes
  • Exercise 3- Analysing an Abstract to Understand Secondary Data- 15 minutes
  • Exercise 4- Analysing Secondary Research- 25 minutes

 

After class

After class time: 60 minutes

Group project - Students may form groups of three or four to conduct an independent, small-scale, secondary data research.

Student can document their results in an online platform (e.g., google slides).

  • How many public libraries are there in your town?
  • What types of public transport are available for people in your town?
